UPDATE: Character details have emerged via ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY along with new head shots of DONNIE YEN and JIANG WEN!

Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen): Pronounced chi-RUT, he’s no Jedi, but he’s devoted to their ways and has used his spirituality to overcome his blindness and become a formidable warrior. “Chirrut falls into the category of being a warrior monk,” says Kennedy. “He very much still believes in everything the Jedi were about.” He maintains that belief even though the Jedi are no longer there to protect the galaxy. As director Gareth Edwards puts it: “This idea that magical beings are going to come and save us is going away, and it’s up to normal, everyday people to take a stand to stop evil from dominating the world.”

13522459_1150009408352611_2060865175_n

Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen): Heavily armored, Baze prefers a blaster to hokey religions and ancient weapons, but he is devoted to protecting his friend Chirrut at all costs. “He understands Chirrut’s spiritual centeredness, but he doesn’t necessarily support it,” Kennedy says. Baze goes along with this Force business because “it’s what his friend deeply believes,” she adds. Think of them as a little like the galactic version of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

UPDATE: It looks like ‘Rogue One’ will be getting more of DONNIE YEN. Yen is set to go back to London in a few weeks to do additional photography for his role as ‘Chirrut’.

Asked by Chinese media during his off time in Hong Kong if he have any plans to spend time with his kids for Father’s Day, Yen replied: “I can’t. My wife and I will be flying to Japan in two days for a project. After that, I’ll be flying all over the place for some more work. I’m going to have to go back to London soon too, to do some additional photography for Rogue One.”

The more Yen the BETTER.

‘Rogue One’ is set to fly into theaters on December 16th.

UPDATE: Images from the OFFICIAL VISUAL STORY GUIDE for ‘Rogue One’ have emerged!

13256328_10153646353331033_2383983975078361692_n 13237619_10153646353636033_6962519093322600420_n 13226695_10153419639781571_5502711222241675123_n 13235556_10153419640401571_1606468360434199022_o

DONNIE YEN’s character is revealed to be “a spiritual soldier” named ‘Chirrut’.

UPDATE: DONNIE YEN reveals a bit more about the amount of action his character will have in ‘Rogue One’ to the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS stating:

“I can tell you that I will be kicking butt a little bit — that is something I believe that they’re clever about. Instead of just having me in there riding around in a Y-wing or an X-wing and shooting laser beams, they’ve got to have me do something.”

UPDATE: DONNIE YEN recently did an interview with SCMP.COM and revealed a bit about ‘Rogue One’ stating:

“I can’t reveal too much about the Star Wars movie, although I can assure you that I’ll be in fight scenes. When I watched Star Wars for the first time I was only 14 or 15. I could never imagine that more than three decades later, I, as a Chinese, would become a lead in it. I’m enjoying the process. It’s a lot of fun.”

So rest assure everyone. Unlike fellow martial arts star Iko Uwais (who was ridiculously underused in ‘The Force Awakens’), Yen is indeed one of the “leads” in this film and WILL be throwing it down in a galaxy far far away!

UPDATE: Check out the FIRST official image (above) from STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY: ROGUE ONE featuring the cast in FULL costume including lead actress FELICITY JONES, JIANG WEN, and DONNIE YEN!

The film also stars BEN MENDELSOHN, FOREST WHITAKAR, MADS MIKKELSEN, DIEGO LUNA, ALAN TUDYK (who will play a mo-cap character), and RIZ AHMED.

Producer KATHLEEN KENNEDY stated regarding the plot that “Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

Judging from the image it looks like Yen will be playing one of the ‘resistance fighter’ alongside Jones and Wen.

‘Rogue One’ will fly into theaters on December 16th, 2016.

Stay tuned for more details!

UPDATE: Reported via CRIENGLISH Donnie Yen’s ‘The Lost Bladesman’ co-star JIANG WEN have joined him in the STAR WARS universe!

the_lost_bladesman2011_06

Currently filming in London, both actors will be making an appearance in STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY: ROGUE ONE not EPISODE 8 as previously rumored. Considering ‘Rogue One’ is suppose to be a prequel to the original trilogy (between Episode 3 and 4), the chances for Yen to appear in ‘Episode 8’ as well may be a stretch. But anything is possible in the movie world, we will just have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, check out this on-set image of Jiang Wen in full costume below (big thanks to DANNY HO for the image).

From the looks of his costume, our best guess is Wen may be playing one of the Rebel pilot.

‘Rogue One’ follows “a band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans”. No words yet on what role Yen will be portraying.

Stay tuned as more details emerges!

UPDATE: For those who had any doubts of this being a made up rumor, DONNIE YEN himself just confirmed his involvement in the ‘Star Wars’ universe by posting this image on his OFFICIAL FACEBOOK PAGE!

11700876_834669969935566_1209696875583332646_n

Stay tuned for details about his role and exactly which ‘Star Wars’ film he will be making an appearance in!

UPDATE: According to CINEMABLEND the next ‘Star Wars’ film to start production will be the spin-off STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE directed by GARETH EDWARDS (Godzilla), NOT ‘Star Wars – Episode 8’. So it sounds like Apple Daily may have gotten the films mixed up in their report. Donnie Yen may be involved in ‘Rogue One’ instead. Either way, the only solid confirmation we can give you is that Yen WILL BE APPEARING IN THE ‘STAR WARS’ UNIVERSE. Stay tuned for more details as they come!

Fans have been waiting so many years for martial arts superstar DONNIE YEN (Ip Man) to finally break through into Hollywood after appearing in minor roles in such films as ‘Blade 2’ and ‘Shanghai Knights’. Our wishes is about to come true as the Yenster will be breaking into Hollywood in a HUGE way…in a ‘galaxy far far way’!

11251126_10153592515732448_8171292208493357460_n

According to Apple Daily, Donnie Yen have officially signed on to appear in STAR WARS – EPISODE 8 as a ‘Jedi’ alongside HARRISON FORD’s ‘Han Solo’.

Producers were debating between Yen and JET LI for the role and they ultimately went with Yen, who is currently at an all-time high in popularity thanks to his portrayal of ‘Ip Man’. It is also said that Li’s salary demand was DOUBLED compared to what was offered to Yen.

Yen will be banking in $4 million for this major role. He will be flying to London next month to begin filming. ‘Star Wars – Episode 8’ is written and directed by RIAN JOHNSON (Looper).

The ‘Star Wars’ franchise is definitely taking a major step up in the action department with ‘A Force Awaken – Episode 7’ (opening on December 18th) featuring the martial arts talents of ‘The Raid’ duo IKO UWAIS and YAYAN RUHIAN, and now Donnie Yen in ‘Episode 8’. ‘Jedi masters’ will never be the same again. May the force be with you!

Stay tuned for more details!

(BIG THANKS to our good friend DANNY HO for the scoop!)

  1. Ot doesn’t make any sense for Donnie to appear in both of the films Rogue One and Episode 8. Unless his character has some crazy anti aging properties and he would be too old to be trained as a Jedi. I think the article is just bs.

  2. Rouge One and XXX are probably the first movies, in which we can see Donnie Yen, here on the northern side of the globe, just south of the north pole, in the small country of Sweden. We didn’t even get Ip Man 3 in this duck pond, which is nothing less than a crime. For me it will be the first time then, to be able to watch this fantastic man in the cinema, both in December and in January. I’m really looking forward to that. It will lighten up the dark wintertime like the “Aurora Borealis”.
Nice to see Mads Mikkelsen as well. Since he’s from Denmark he’s our brother. The peoples of Sweden, Norway and Denmark are sisters and brothers. We can talk to each other, in our own three different languages, just like Ip Man and Jin from the north spoke with each other, each in his own language.
I had not watched any of the SWs movies earlier, but have done it now, only because I want to know what it’s all about and to understand Rouge One. Thank you and have a nice day!
    Mona from Sweden
