Alan Ng was born in Hong Kong, he has been in the film industry for over 25 years. He first started out in Hong Kong on TVB as an Action actor and stuntman for over 8 years. Most impressive is that Alan is an 8th generation Jackie Chan stunt team member for over 14 years and was previously a part of Ka Lok Stunt Team for over 8 years.
He has served as a Fight Choreographer, Assistant Stunt Coordinator, Stunt Coordinator, Action Coordinator, Action Director on films such as The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), The Karate Kid (2010), Chinese Zodiac (2012), Police Story: Lockdown (2013), Golden Job (2018) and most recently Hidden Strike (2023) starring Jackie Chan and John Cena.
Over the years Alan has worked with some of the best of the best in the action industry such as the legendary Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Wu Jing, Daniel Wu, Nicholas Tse and Yuen Woo Ping. Now he gets to add to that list a handful of action stars such as Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa from the upcoming Expend4bles.
MAAC sits down with Alan to speak about his role as Stunt Coordinator for Expend4bles.
MAAC: Were you a fan of The Expendables franchise before signing onto Expend4bles as a stunt coordinator?
Alan Ng: Yes, I watched all the previous Expendables when they were released. I really enjoy watching all the legendary action stars all together in one film.
MAAC: How excited were you to collaborate with action icons Sly Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa?
Alan Ng: Very excited, they are the very top talent action stars and I’m honoured to have worked with them.
MAAC: As far as the action is concerned, what was your game plan to top the previous installments?
Alan Ng: My idea was to give the fights a different feel and style. For instance, the hand-to-hand fights and knife fights, were choreographed so the rhythm and timing is different from the previous installments.
MAAC: Which member of the cast are you most impressed by when it comes to the film’s stunts and fights?
Alan Ng: It would definitely be Jason (Statham). He looks at the fight once and picks up the fight choreography straight away. His timing and rhyme work perfectly with Iko (Uwais). Jason did the fights, the falls, and hits all himself. He would be a great stuntman if he wasn’t an actor. Tony Jaa and Iko are also so talented, and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to work with all of them together.
MAAC: Did most of the cast members do their own stunts?
Alan Ng: Yes, we always try our best to use the cast for their own stunts unless the stunt is very dangerous then we must get a double in.
MAAC: Which action scene are you most excited for the audience to see in the film? Our personal favorite is Statham vs Uwais!
Alan Ng: You answered that for me haha! My favorite is also Jason and Iko’s fight. It has a different feel to the previous Expendables.
MAAC: If the studio decides to move forward with Expendables 5, would you like to join the cast and take on these guys in front of the camera?
Alan Ng: Yes, I would love too. It will be great to work with so many talented casts again.
MAAC: You’ve already worked with so many action legends in the industry such as Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and now the cast of Expend4bles. Is there anyone else in particular that you are still dying to work with?
Alan Ng: I would love to work with Chris Hemsworth or Keanu Reeves.
Expend4bles hits theaters this Friday, September 22nd.
