Director Adam Wingard (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) is returning to his genre roots, and if the first trailer for Onslaught is any indication, audiences are in for one of the year’s most chaotic rides.
A24’s upcoming action-horror thriller is led by Adria Arjona (Andor), and it looks like a blood-soaked blend of The Guest, The Terminator, and classic ’80s action excess. The film follows a former Army sniper who finds herself protecting her family and community after genetically engineered super soldiers escape from a secret military facility and descend on a remote trailer park.
The trailer wastes no time showcasing Wingard’s signature style, mixing brutal action, dark humor, and practical creature effects as Arjona’s battle-hardened protagonist goes to war against a relentless army of mutant commandos. While explosions, shootouts, and hand-to-hand combat dominate the footage, the film also appears to lean heavily into horror territory, with several unsettling glimpses of the film’s mysterious super-powered threats.
Arjona headlines an eclectic ensemble that includes MMA star Alex Pereira, Dan Stevens (The Ritual), Drew Starkey (Queer), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), and Rebecca Hall (Gozilla x Kong: The New Empire). The project reunites Wingard with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, the creative partner behind cult favorites You’re Next and The Guest.
Described as a “gonzo action-horror thriller,” Onslaught marks Wingard’s first feature since Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and appears to be a deliberate return to the smaller-scale, high-energy storytelling that made him a favorite among horror and action fans.
Onslaught storms into theaters on September 4th.
