Live-Action Moana Trailer Debuts — And It’s Sailing Into New Waters

Disney has dropped the first official trailer for its Moana live-action remake, and it’s everything you’d hope for: lush ocean vistas, Polynesian spirit, and a clear promise that the heart of the original is still very much alive.

The teaser introduces Catherine Lagaʻaia (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) as Moana, capturing her on the brink of her hero’s journey as she answers the ocean’s call. Alongside her is Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), reprising his role as Maui with a blend of swagger, strength, and that unmistakable demigod charm.

Shot on location in New Zealand, the visuals lean into both majesty and realism — you can almost feel the salt on your skin. The trailer also gives a nod to beloved Disney animation traditions by bringing to life iconic elements like the Kakamora and the mystical ocean itself.

Behind the camera, Thomas Kail (Hamilton) directs, with Dana Ledoux Miller co-writing. Miller has shared that bringing Moana into live action isn’t just about nostalgia — there’s a raw, human vulnerability here that works even stronger in real-world landscapes.

Mark your calendars: Moana sails into theaters on July 10, 2026, offering both longtime fans and new audiences a chance to rediscover the waves of Motunui in a bold, new way.
