UPDATE: Cliffhanger 2 is getting a major creative overhaul. The project will no longer be a sequel but instead a full on reboot. Sylvester Stallone and director Ric Roman Waugh has both dropped out of the project.

The Cliffhanger reboot will now feature Lily James (Baby Driver) in the lead alongside Pierce Brosnan (Black Adam).

Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop) steps in as director while production is underway in Austria. The rest of the cast includes Nell Tiger Free (The First Omen), Franz Rogowski (Passages), Shubham Saraf (Shantaram), Assaad Bouab (Franklin), Suzy Bemba (Poor Things) and Bruno Gouery (Emily in Paris).

The reboot features Brosnan as seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper, who operates a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with daughter Sydney. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s daughter Naomi (James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival.

Action legend Sylvester Stallone (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3) is set to return for a sequel to his 1993 classic actioner Cliffhanger.

Cliffhanger 2 will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen) from a script by Mark Bianculli (Hunters).

Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film (Fast & Furious franchise) will produce with Rocket Science along with Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions.

No plot details has been revealed besides the fact that Stallone will reprise his character of Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker.

“Growing up with the biggest action films of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” said Director Waugh.
