Netflix is unleashing an intense new Japanese battle-royale drama with Last Samurai Standing, arriving on November 13th. The streamer bills it as a brutal mash-up of Shōgun and Squid Game — and it looks wild.

Directed by Michihito Fujii and brought to life against the backdrop of the late 19th-century Meiji era, the story unfolds at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple. As night falls, 292 skilled warriors, including lead character Shujiro Saga (played by Junichi Okada), face off in a deadly game. The rules are simple—and merciless: grab your opponent’s wooden tag, survive until you reach Tokyo, and win a staggering 100 billion yen.

Junichi Okada isn’t just the star—he’s also serving as producer and action choreographer, shaping the show’s visceral combat scenes. Author Shogo Imamura, who penned the source manga Ikusagami, praised Okada’s casting, saying it felt like a dream come true.

The series boasts a bustling ensemble cast, including Riho Yoshioka, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Hideaki Ito, Takayuki Yamada, and more—each playing characters driven by personal stakes in this deadly match.
