The long-awaited live-action adaptation of Gundam is officially underway. Legendary Entertainment and Netflix, in collaboration with Bandai Namco Filmworks, have confirmed that production kicked off this month in Queensland, Australia.
Helmed by Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth), the film stars Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid) and Noah Centineo (Street Fighter). They’re joined by a stacked ensemble that includes Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chua-Tran, and Jason Isaacs.
A cornerstone of sci-fi and anime for more than four decades, Gundam helped define the “real robot” genre and sparked a global multimedia franchise. This new take brings the saga into live-action with an original story centered on rival mech pilots caught on opposing sides of a prolonged war between Earth and its former space colonies. As tensions escalate and loyalties shift, both are drawn into a race across the stars that could determine humanity’s future.
The film aims to blend large-scale mech combat with character-driven storytelling, promising a more grounded emotional core alongside its interstellar spectacle.
Produced by Legendary Pictures alongside Bandai Namco Filmworks, the project continues Legendary’s push into major franchise filmmaking. The studio’s recent hits include A Minecraft Movie, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with upcoming titles like Dune: Part Three, Street Fighter, and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova already in the pipeline.
Mickle is producing the film with Linda Moran under their Nightshade banner, alongside Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sweeney, Centineo, and Enzo Marc. Executive producers include Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata.
The Gundam live-action movie will debut exclusively on Netflix.
