Fast & Furious franchise star Sung Kang (Shaky Shivers) has signed on to direct a new live-action adaptation of the classic manga series Initial D.

The original Shuichi Shigeno comic series follows a apathetic teenager named Takumi Fujiwara who is unwittingly trained to be an expert driver by his ex-street racer father. Takumi’s dad exposes him to driving at a young age by making him drive their AE86 Toyota Corolla to make deliveries for their family’s tofu shop.

“It’s about cars and drifting and cool things like that. Almost a Rocky or Karate Kid. A fun, big-budget movie that expresses my love affair for cars,” Kang told SCMP.

The first live-action adaptation was made in Hong Kong back in 2005 which starred Jay Chou, Edison Chen and Shawn Yue.

Stay tuned.
