Donnie Yen (The Prosecutor) is bringing his martial arts expertise to the world of video games, with the Hong Kong action star officially revealed as Mó Yuan in S-GAME’s highly anticipated action title Phantom Blade Zero. The announcement arrived alongside an extended trailer and the launch of pre-orders for the game on PlayStation 5 and PC.
Yen’s involvement is considerably bigger than simply providing his likeness. He portrays Mó Yuan, the father of protagonist Soul, and also contributed facial and motion capture for the character. More importantly, Yen has reportedly served as a creative consultant on the game’s kung fu choreography since 2023, working with his stunt team to help bring a more authentic martial arts style to the game.
The new trailer finally reveals the identity of the mysterious masked warrior who was first shown protecting a baby in Phantom Blade Zero’s June 2026 PlayStation State of Play footage. That character is Mó Yuan, with Yen stepping out from behind the mask as Soul’s father.
The footage also offers a much deeper look at the game’s combat. It follows Soul as he battles through hordes of enemies, encounters allies in a village devastated by war, and faces several formidable bosses. The fast, fluid swordplay and wuxia-inspired action remain central to the game’s identity.
Yen’s contribution has reportedly been kept secret for years. S-GAME confirmed that the veteran martial artist has been involved with the project’s kung fu choreography since 2023, shortly after Phantom Blade Zero was first announced. His longtime collaborator Kenji Tanigaki, who has worked extensively with Yen, was previously revealed as the game’s action director—an early clue to the connection that had gone largely unnoticed.
For Yen, the project represents another major collaboration in a career that has made him one of the most recognizable martial arts stars in the world. Known for films such as Ip Man, Hero, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and John Wick: Chapter 4, Yen has built his reputation around combining traditional martial arts with modern action filmmaking.
Meanwhile, Phantom Blade Zero has been pushed back from its previously announced September release date and is now scheduled to launch on October 29th. S-GAME said the additional development time is being used to further polish character models, environments, and other aspects of the game.
Pre-orders are now available, with the game coming to PS5 and PC. Fans won’t have to wait long for another major look at the project, either: Sony has announced a dedicated Phantom Blade Zero State of Play presentation for August 17th, promising an extended gameplay showcase covering combat, exploration, the game’s world, and character progression.
With Donnie Yen now officially revealed as one of its key characters—and with the martial arts legend having helped shape its combat behind the scenes—Phantom Blade Zero is looking increasingly like one of the most ambitious action games on the horizon.
