UPDATE: Marvel Studios has decided to temporarily shut down production on Blade and will no longer start shooting in November as previously scheduled.
The pause will give the studio more time to search for a new director and to refine the current script. It is their hope to restart production in early 2023. The official release date will now be pushed back from November 3, 2023 to September 6, 2024.
UPDATE: Director Bassam Tariq will no longer be helming Blade due to scheduling conflicts.
“Its been an honor working with the wonderful folks at Marvel. We were able to put together a killer cast and crew. Eager to see where the next director takes the film,” stated Tariq.
The project has also gone through several changes in writers from Stacy Osei-Kuffour to the current writer Beau DeMayo, who worked on Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight.
In my opinion, the perfect replacement to take the helm is director David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Bullet Train) who expressed interest in the project back in 2019 when he told Screen Rant, “I love Blade. And it’s actually one of the first stunt jobs that I was in, the original Wesley Snipes one. I was a stunt performer in that movie. I was in the blood club. You remember that scene? Yes, dancing around in the recycled special effects blood. It was great.”
“Mahershala is such a great actor, and I’ve been fortunate to work with some great actors, and I never go wrong that way. Having him play that role is a big deal and would be really exciting. So, yeah, I would love to have that conversation,” added Leitch.
Another great candidate is J.J. Perry who did an excellent job on Netflix’s vampire actioner Day Shift.
Blade is currently scheduled to start rolling this November in Atlanta.
Stay tuned.
