UPDATE: Encore Films has acquired worldwide distribution rights outside mainland China for Kung Fu Soccer. The acquisition was announced during the Shanghai International Film Festival, with the company planning a global theatrical rollout.

Production wrapped in 2025 and the film is currently in post-production, with extensive visual effects work underway. The movie is targeting a 2026 worldwide release, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Shaolin Soccer.

Encore Films CEO Joyce Lee described the project as “a joyful and action-packed celebration of sportsmanship and perseverance,” adding that audiences around the world are eager to see Chow return to the genre that made him famous.

Released in 2001, the original Shaolin Soccer grossed more than $40 million worldwide and remains one of Hong Kong cinema’s most influential comedies. More than two decades later, Kung Fu Soccer aims to bring that same mix of absurd humor, fantasy action and crowd-pleasing energy to a new generation of fans.
