UPDATE: In a move that feels both unexpected and undeniably intriguing, Michaela Coel is stepping into the world of underground martial arts with a bold new take on Bloodsport. The Emmy-winning creator of I May Destroy You is set to write and direct a reimagining of the cult classic for A24, marking another collaboration between the filmmaker and the studio.

Coel’s version isn’t expected to be a straightforward remake. Instead, it’s being described as a reimagining—one that will likely bring her signature character-driven storytelling and thematic depth into a genre typically defined by brute force and spectacle. In a statement, Coel expressed fascination with fighters and the psychological toll of their discipline, hinting that her take may dig deeper into the emotional and mental stakes behind the combat.

The project has been in development limbo for years, with multiple filmmakers previously circling the property, but none successfully bringing it to fruition. Now, with Coel at the helm and A24 backing the production, Bloodsport may finally evolve into something far removed from its ‘80s roots—while still honoring the intensity that made the original a cult favorite.

With Coel continuing to expand her creative footprint following roles like her appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, this latest project signals a fascinating genre pivot—one that could redefine what a martial arts film looks like in the A24 era.

A24, the production and distribution company behind the Oscar winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), is currently in negotiations to acquire the remake rights to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1988 martial arts classic Bloodsport.

Back in 2011, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm) was attached to lead a reimagining of the classic, working from a script by The Karate Kid creator Robert Mark Kamen. By 2013, James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) stepped in to replace Noyce, but the film still failed to enter production.

Rumors resurfaced in 2019, suggesting that John Wick directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski were eyeing a remake, though nothing materialized. Now, with A24 in the mix, it looks like a remake of Bloodsport will finally come to fruition.

The original film follows U.S. soldier Frank Dux as he went to Hong Kong to be accepted into the Kumite, a highly secret and extremely violent martial-arts competition. While trying to gain access into the underground world of clandestine fighters, he also has to avoid military officers who consider him to be AWOL. After enduring a difficult training and beginning a romance with journalist Janice Kent, Frank is given the opportunity to fight. But can he survive?

Stay tuned.
