Fresh off the global domination of Squid Game, Lee Byung-hun (No Other Choice) is diving headfirst back into the action genre with Nambeol, a new martial arts epic that sounds tailor-made for fans of gritty historical warfare and brutal hand-to-hand combat.

According to Deadline, the upcoming film is set during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty and centers on nine elite fighters sent on a deadly mission to Tsushima Island to rescue civilians abducted by Japanese pirates. Inspired by real historical conflicts, Nambeol is being positioned as a large-scale action drama with a darker, hard-edged tone.

Lee is set to lead the warrior squad, marking another major action showcase for the veteran star whose career has balanced prestige dramas with blockbuster spectacle for decades. While many international audiences know him best as the cold and calculating Front Man in Squid Game, longtime genre fans will remember his scene-stealing turns in I Saw the Devil, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and the G.I. Joe franchise.

The film also marks the directorial debut of Lee Mo-gae, whose visually striking resume includes I Saw the Devil, Exhuma, and The Good, the Bad, the Weird. With that pedigree behind the camera, Nambeol could deliver the kind of slick, visceral action cinematography that martial arts fans crave.

Hive Media Corp., the production company behind the project, has steadily built a reputation for prestige Korean hits, and Nambeol looks like another ambitious swing. Between the historical backdrop, pirate conflict, and elite-warrior premise, the film already feels primed to attract comparisons to classics like Seven Samurai and 13 Assassins — albeit with a distinctly Korean flavor.

No release date has been announced yet, but with Lee Byung-hun leading the charge, Nambeol instantly becomes one of the most intriguing Asian action projects currently in development.
