Michael Fassbender (Black Bag) and Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider) are stepping into nightmare territory in the first trailer for Hope, the long-awaited sci-fi thriller from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin.

The director behind The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing finally unveiled footage from his mysterious new project, giving audiences their first look at the atmospheric survival thriller that has been quietly building hype for years.

Synopsis: In the remote South Korea village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung- min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung- ki (Zo In-Sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.

Fassbender and Vikander lead the film’s international ensemble, marking the couple’s first on-screen collaboration since The Light Between Oceans. The cast also includes Squid Game breakout Hoyeon, Bones and All star Taylor Russell, veteran Korean actor Hwang Jung-min, and Smugglers star Zo In-sung.

The trailer immediately sparked excitement online, particularly among fans of Na Hong-jin’s previous work. The filmmaker has developed a reputation for crafting some of the most unsettling thrillers in modern Korean cinema, with The Wailing still widely regarded as one of the genre’s defining horror films of the last decade.

Production on Hope has faced a lengthy road to completion, with updates remaining scarce following the film’s announcement. But the release of the first trailer confirms the project is finally nearing release and positions it as one of 2026’s most anticipated international genre films.

No exact release date has been announced yet, but the film is currently expected to debut sometime in fall 2026.
